This event was hosted by Michael Fuchs, a member of their Event Planning Committee. The Total Team Construction Office Olympics also included its own “torch bearing ceremony”, a motivational speech, an awards ceremony, and opening and closing music. Total Team Construction's website is www.totalteamconstructionllc.com August 24, 2009Total Team Construction LLC, of Waukesha, Wisconsin has been awarded the contract to provide construction management services for the Adult Learning Center located at 1916 N. 4th Street in Milwaukee. The project consists of select demolition on the first floor of the building and remodeling of the space to new classrooms, offices, and a computer lab. The architect for this project is Russel E. Lafrombois III, LLC. “Our space at the former St. Galls Church served the Adult Learning Center (ALC) well in the 30 years we were there. When the Racine Dominican sisters came together for a needs assessment of the community, adult education was the most requested service. So in 1979, 10 students, two volunteers and one teacher started the St. Galls Adult Center,” explained Center Director Herb Hayden. For the past 30 years, the Adult Learning Center has offered participants a variety of educational opportunities that concentrate on strengthening basic academic skills, along with job readiness, life skills, healthy living/lifestyles, computer literacy and the development of the whole person. The Adult Learning Center is located on the city’s near north side, to be close to Milwaukee’s educationally disadvantaged population in the central city. With approximately 160 admissions each year, participants are primarily African Americans ranging in age from 18 to 65 -- none of them have a high school diploma. Half of the participants are functioning below a 7th grade level for reading and math, and are at a 5th grade writing level. Some are women serving as sole providers of their household, though there has been an increase in the number of young men (ages 18-30) attending. Many are W-2 participants or hold minimum wage, part-time jobs. With its current classroom configuration, the ALC presently enrolls a maximum of 85 people at one time. “After 30 years of success, and over 250 GED graduates, we’ve been blessed to expand our services to more adult learners. As the economy has taken a downturn, and unemployment is on the rise, adults are turning to education to improve their employability. Further, President Obama has requested more citizens take the time and return to school to further their education and the ALC wants to be the provider, for both men and women, of their higher learning experience,” stated Hayden. After renovating the former Chapel of St. Francis of Assisi, the ALC will move from a 3,200 square feet, second floor space with no ADA accessibility and no air conditioning to a first floor, totally ADA accessible, space with almost 6,000 square feet and air conditioning that will be able to accommodate over 100 adult learners, volunteers and staff. “On behalf of the students, volunteers and staff, I’d like to thank our Architect, Russ LaFrambois, for an excellent design, as well as Bill, Angie and the entire Total Team Construction family for taking on this endeavor and helping the ALC continue to transform lives through education in the heart of the central city for many years to come!” proclaimed Center Director Herb Hayden. The grand opening of the Adult Learning Center is on Tuesday September 8, 2009 at 9:00A.M. The Adult Learning Center website is www.mlkadultlearningcenter.org Russell E. The Owner Representatives for the project, Sue Black from the Milwaukee County Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture and Joe Bartolotta from Bartolotta’s Restaurants received feedback from the Lake Park Friends. The Lake Park Friends a non-profit community group whose mission is to promote the preservation and enjoyment of Lake Park, to sponsor educational, recreational and cultural events in the park, and to raise funds for the restoration and enhancement of the park in the spirit of Frederick Law Olmsted. Lake Park pavilion designed by Alfred C. Clas opened to the public July 11, 1903 and was remodeled in 1927. The lower level has been used as a concession stand, swim suit change area, and gathering area. Currently, the main Community Room area is used by the Lake Park Friends for meetings and gatherings and is also available to the general public. The scope of the project included updating the rest rooms, renovating the meeting area, adding a kitchenette and adding new finishes. With planning and care, the design and construction team was able to save the original marble wainscot material and not only re-use the material for new wainscot, but also for new countertops and back splashes at the toilet rooms and kitchenette.
